The teaming up of the minister and the physician is emblematic of a century of rhetoric surrounding alcohol use and abuse in America. For over a century, Americans argued for abstinence from alcohol using a combination of scientific and moral reasons. What made Rush and Belknap's writing compelling and persuasive for many Americans? Why did later propaganda continue to use Rush and Belknap's two-fold argument against alcohol consumption? In this paper I will address these questions by discussing the rhetorical methods used in Temperance and Prohibition Era propaganda.

Prohibition provided political backing and legitimacy for the religious revivals of the early twentieth century. While critics scoffed at the fundamentalists' stance on the coming millennium and interpretations of the bible, calling them backwards and extreme, Christian fundamentalists held their ground regarding their anti-drinking crusade. According to Morone, Prohibition offered them [fundamentalists] their one link to national authority, the one public commitment to resisting moral decay (337).

Studying, lots of hours of community service, and great recommendations. Seriously, there is no magic formula. I worked my butt off in high school. I have about a 3.8 unweighted GPA and I m ranked 3 in my class. I have over two hundred hours of community service. I m involved in church. Oh, and I m a great writer. Really, Brown looks for students who can be independent and dedicated to their studies. It s easy to get academically screwed with that open curriculum. Here s one of the essays I wrote for Brown. Brown University. The very name alludes prestige. What first kindled my interest in Brown was its Ivy League status. The Ivies are known as top tier schools. Among high school students, the schools are know as schools to which only aspiring seniors want to matriculate. As one of those seniors, attending an Ivy League university is my goal. There are many colleges in America, but Brown is my first choice. As I began the task of researching colleges in my freshman year of high school, Brown stood out. I am considering becoming a child psychiatrist, and Brown has a myriad of psychology courses. Brown is strong in related disciplines. African American history influenced me to apply to Brown. My ancestors endured slavery, Jim Crow, and racism so that future generations could receive an education. If I did not strive to do my best, I would feel like they suffered in vain. I take education seriously. I need a college that takes education seriously. That is why I am interested in Brown.

Adistinguishing characteristic of Brown University is that it is a university college: a major teaching and research university yet a medium-sized liberal arts college.
