A sheep business can be a very profitable venture especially if you raise a lot of them however starting it may tend to be very slow. For an entrepreneur to succeed in such a venture a lot of patience is needed as well as understanding the cycles of your business for harvest time is a different season from planting.

Basic as it may sound but the first step in becoming successful is knowing what your business is about. Take ownership and be proactive. Get hungry, grab books that will expand your thinking. Study the different breeds of sheep. Know what they eat, their life span, how they procreate and what climates suit them.

Start with what you know about cows. Are you going to run a dairy farm or a cattle ranch/feed lot? Cows are a 24/7 responsibility. You need to feed and water them every day. You need to keep an eye out for sick and injured animals and clean up the manure on a regular basis. Dairy farms add the requirement of milking the cows twice a day; which also means washing the cows udders twice a day-fortunately technology has improved things a lot, but the cost for this substantial. Where do you want to have your farm/ranch? How much land do you think you will need? (Hint you will need at least 120 acres, depending on what kind of cows you have, the number of cows and what you plan to feed them. Most farms alot 3 or 4 acres to the farm buildings and animals. The rest is used to grow feed grains for the cows. Best to start looking for work as a farm hand. That way you learn if it is truly the career for you. For cattle, try applying to ranches in Nebraska, Colorado, Texas, Wyoming, Kansas and Oklahoma. If you want a dairy farm, try Iowa, Wisconsin, Vermont or California. The state s Cattlemen Association or Dairy Board might be helpful in finding a job. If you know nothing about farming, you better learn it fast. If you are in high school, join the FFA (Future Farmers of America). In college study Ag Business and Agriculture or Vet Medicine (specialize in livestock animals). Vet medicine will help you keep the animals healthy and cut down on your vet bills, but it will not help you learn what to do to provide the cows food and run a farm.

So you want to raise cattle, eh? Well I ll tell you one thing: farming/ranching is a hell of a lot harder than it looks. Books and websites can only tell you so much and do so much for you. What they don t give you is experience or the hands-on know-how of working with machinery, cattle, the weather, and other unpredictabilities. You must also know off-by heart that Law of Murphy s that every farmer is all too familiar with: "Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong." You re not working week days from 9 am to 5 pm. You rarely ever get any holidays, sometimes not much sleep, and typically your pay-check only comes once a year. If you want to start a cattle farm, you ve gotta learn to be literally a mechanical genius, a math-wiz, a great salesman, a bovine whisperer and a veterinarian all rolled into one. It s much harder to get good cattlemen to hire on to your operation than if you were running a fast-food franchise or a bank. With that, you will be working by yourself most of the time. But hey! Go for it! You re on the right track by planning to start small, and to start with the most docile beef breed that America has to offer. Start a business plan. Start by asking yourself three questions: "Where am I now? What would I like to be? How do I plan on getting there?" These three questions are all part of a strategic plan, the kind of plan that starts you off on your business plan. Do a SWOT analysis of yourself (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) and what you know of the beef industry that could affect you in some way. Then, start planning on what part of Arkansas you are looking to buy, look at the terrain, soil type, vegetation, climate, historical weather data, etc. that could affect you when you raise cattle; look at the different markets available, and decide whether you can make a better go at it with a niche market instead of going through the main-stream of selling through the salebarn. Look at how you can potentially expand your operation, whether you d do best by buying only 50 acres instead of 160 acres or vice versa. Succession planning is also important, in case you are "removed suddenly" or want to slow down or retire. Google search "business plan for raising cattle" and you ll get a whole pile of hits (don t put the phrase in quotations though). Also search for different ways of raising your cows, from the more reccomended method from yours truly to rotational graze for ~365 days of the year, to drylotting cows. Calving, culling and breeding are three other important things you must look at. Once you get everything down on paper, start looking the land over, at the facilities already there, and familiarize yourself with them. See what needs repairs, what needs to be replaced, what areas of the land that need improvement, etc. If you have all your corrals, feed, and watering stations in good order and up and working, you can start looking for your cows. Even though it s a bit early yet before you get any cows, I need to give you some advice: stay away from the cows being sold in the salebarn, unless it s a dispersal or 3-in-1 cow sale. Have a buddy with you that is an experienced cattleman you can trust to show you which cows are the good ones and which are the not-so-good ones. Besides the salebarn, you can also get your cows through private treaty, or buy visiting a producer who s selling his cows privately. Ask him everything you can think of of those cows you are looking at, and don t buy right away, unless you feel in your gut that these cows you are looking at are the ones. At your level of experience, also go for the 3-in-1 s (bred cows with calves at side) or pregnant cows. Avoid the heifers for now until you get calving experience under your belt, as they are a bit of a pain for any cattleman to deal with. And try to buy local, like within 100 to 150 miles radius of your farm. The closer the better. There are a ton of books to look at. Go to Amazon.com and type in the search "beef cattle" and you will find a lot of books to choose from. Storey s Guide is the best one IMHO, as well as Beef Cattle Science. Other books are good too; make sure you look at the ratings below before deciding your purchase. Google search "beef cattle" and you will come up with a ton of websites. University/college extension websites are the best source to get info off of, but other non-school cattle sites that I like are CattleToday.com, any breed association websites, Alberta Agricultural websites (and other Canadian provinces with government ag websites including Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario), Kit Pharo and Leachman Cattle, foragebeef.ca, Temple Grandin s website (great for handling facilities and handling cattle), the list goes on. Don t search "cows" because 95% of the time you will come across sites for dairy cattle or some city-slicker webpage for cows instead of for raising beef cows.
