I have written several times on this blog about the importance of your personal statement in the PA school application process. In fact, the personal statement is the single most important aspect of your entire application.

Second, the conclusion is no place to bring up new ideas. If a brilliant idea tries to sneak into our final paragraph, we must pluck it out and let it have its own paragraph earlier in the essay. If it doesn''''''''t fit the structure or argument of the essay, we will leave it out altogether and let it have its own essay later on. The last thing we want in our conclusion is an excuse for our readers'''''''' minds wandering off into some new field. Allowing a peer editor or friend to reread our essay before we hand it in is one way to check this impulse before it ruins our good intentions and hard work.

Here is a brief list of things that you might accomplish in your concluding paragraph(s).* There are certainly other things that you can do, and you certainly don''''''''t want to do all these things. They''''''''re only suggestions:

This list is a basic guideline by which to structure all your essays. Obviously, they can vary in length and in paragraph number. However, within the confines of this skeletal structure, is everything you will in order to write a successful essay.

Body Paragraph Two should follow the exact same rules as Body Paragraph One. This time, pick the second theme in support of your thesis argument and cite evidence for it. Again, you must open this paragraph with a transitional sentence; one leading from the previous theme to the current theme.

The financial aid statement is a simple, short piece of writing that students may include on a financial aid letter, in an essay, or in other communications to a financial aid department. The financial aid statement may not be a full communication on its own, but rather an element of a more complex financial aid appeal. If you need to write such a statement in order to reach out to a university or college's financial aid office, follow some basic steps.

Sorry to say this, but no, it s not. Your thesis is very vague and it leaves the reader with a blank expression on their face. The thesis is the guiding point of your paper. It tells the reader what you ll be talking about in your essay. You stated you topic, but you need to include WHY there s a reason for everything. You will then explain those reasons in your body paragraphs. There are 3 parts to every thesis statement. 1) The topic of your essay 2) Your opinion on the topic of your essay 3) The reasons for your opinion. (have 3 reasons why you think this. The objective of this is to persuade your readers to believe your opinion) It should generally go near the end of your introduction paragraph. Here s an example. Topic: Shopping at Walmart Opinion: Everyone should shop at Walmart Reasons: 1) Walmart has a variety 2) Walmart has a large inventory 3) Walmart has cheap prices Now, let s write the thesis statement. You can write your points at the end or beginning of the statement or in the next sentence.Choose whatever prompt you like the most to use in your paper. Listed at the end of the sentence: Everyone should shop at Walmart because they have a variety, large inventory, and cheap prices. Listed at the beginning of the sentence: The variety, large inventory, and cheap prices at Walmart are why everyone should shop there. Points listed in the next sentence: Everyone should shop at Walmart. They have a variety, large inventory, and cheap prices. You should create a strong thesis statement. Don t make it weak. Here s characteristics of a strong thesis statement • Answers a specific question • Takes a distinct position on the topic • Is debatable (a reasonable person could argue an alternative position) • Appropriately focused for the page length of the assignment • Allows your reader to anticipate the organization of your argument Characteristics of a weak thesis statement. You should AVOID doing this. • Vague: Raises an interesting topic or question but doesn’t specify an argument • Offers plot summary, statement of fact, or obvious truths instead of an argument • Offers opinion or conjecture rather than an argument (cannot be proven with textual evidence) • Is too broad or too complex for the length of the paper • Uses meaningful‐sounding words but doesn’t say anything ----------------- There s a reason for everything because reason 1, reason 2, and reason 3.

Have you ever tried counting how much time writing a single paper takes? Ever added up the time spent on writing essays and other assignments within a term? Within a year? A few years?

You can’t evaluate the full damage until you’ve seen the bigger picture. Research shows that an average student can spend up to 450 hours a term working on writing assignments. Can you imagine that? 450 hours! You could write a book in that time or do lots of other useful things. But instead, you are working on another essay that no one will appreciate (pessimistic but true).

First impressions are so important. How many times have you heard that? It is true that the first impression—whether it’s a first meeting with a person or the first sentence of a paper—sets the stage for a lasting opinion.

The introductory paragraph of any paper, long or short, should start with a sentence that piques the interest of your readers.

Hey buddy, So you want your thesis statement to be broad enough to cover your pros but also narrow enough to remain focused. To write a thesis that lists your talking points is weak, so we ll avoid that. Here are a few examples: "Year round schooling is ultimately beneficial for society because.." "Though unconventional, year round school is the perfect solution to many of our schools problems." You obviously want to lead up to your thesis statement so they might differ depending on what approach you choose to take. As for the body of your paragraph, your reasons are rather unorganized and lost. I d recommend writing an outline for your essay before moving any further. As for my suggestions. So with this essay you are trying to convince your reader to embrace year round school, correct? Then you must address each party involved. With a 5 paragraph essay I d split this into 3 categories of people affected by year round school. Here s a rough outline that comes to MY mind. I. Introduction II. Students and their families -Shorter summers means less forgotten -More periodic breaks result in adequate time to relieve stress without forgetting as much -Working families who struggle with finding childcare/daycare in summer are better off. -Family vacations can be planned with more ease with more frequent and evenly distributed breaks. III. Teachers and their families -Teachers won t lose interest in their work the same way students won t lose interest with the new break system -You can even mention teachers can have more adequate time to grade papers and catch up on things, reducing their stress and therefore even improving quality of education since they won t be drowned in papers to grade as often. Less stress also means better health. Not to mention they get more time with their own families too. IV. School administration -You mentioned the overcrowding and multitracking system -School system would be more in tune with all other schools around the world. - School statistics will improve because greater time can be spent adequately improving those with low scores. Better scores means more money (grants) for schools! Which ultimately leads to better learning experience for students and teachers alike. V. Conclusion -Sum up your points but don t restate them. -Restate your thesis in a NEW way. Feel free to shoot me an email if you need me proofread your paper or need further assistance, I d be more than happy to do so :) [email protected]

tells the reader how you will interpret the significance of the subject matter under discussion. is a road map for the paper; in other words, it tells the reader what to expect from the rest of the paper. directly answers the question asked of you. A thesis is an interpretation of a question or subject, not the subject itself. The subject, or topic, of an essay might be World War II or Moby Dick; a thesis must then offer a way to understand the war or the novel. makes a claim that others might dispute. is usually a single sentence somewhere in your first paragraph that presents your argument to the reader. The rest of the paper, the body of the essay, gathers and organizes evidence that will persuade the reader of the logic of your interpretation.
