Creative writing is anything where the purpose is to express thoughts, feelings and emotions rather than to simply convey information. I’ll be focusing.

I’ll be focusing on creative fiction in this post (mainly short stories and novels), but poetry, (auto)biography and creative non-fiction are all other forms of creative writing. Here’s a couple of definitions:

Writing short stories  means beginning as close to the climax as possible everything else is a distraction. A novel can take a more meandering path, but should still start with a scene that sets the tone for the whole book.

A short story conserves characters and scenes, typically by focusing on just one conflict , and drives towards a sudden, unexpected revelation. Go easy on the exposition and talky backstory your reader doesn’t need to know everything that you know about your characters.

Your writing shows "beginner" tendencies. They show here. 1. Use of long words when shorter, common words are better. 2. Use of run-on sentences. 3. Strange use of verbs. 4. Too many adverbs. 5. Long, unneeded descriptive sentences--and more. Suggest you revise. Good writers always do many revisions. Suggest you read this aloud to see how it sounds. You ll hear errors. You ll hear where a full stop is needed. Suggest you also find an impartial, educated mentor to help you. Or join a writers group in your area. Call the research librarian and/or a school for information about both. Good luck. Edit: Examples of shorter words and phrases: 1) Instead of "Kissed by the shores, crystal white specks of sand greet me from far below the cliff face. Try. "Below the seaside cliff, I see a white shore." 2) Instead of ".my attention is averted." Try.. "I stop watching." 3) Instead of ".as the howling wind beckons me step away retreat back to the cobble pathway. Though why would I? I naively step forward in defiance." Try. "A high wind pushes me. I won t let it put me on the cobbled path. I step forward." -Delete ".towards and away from one another, orchestrating their own dance." -Delete ".like melting honeycomb ice cream." and rest of that sentence. 4) Instead of. "I am momentarily characterized by my longing for adventure, for bounding about the rock pools and feeding the little slimy animals that burst with colour and eagerly navigate around their way around the pool." Try. "Now I want adventure. I want to explore rock pools and feed the colourful fish there." 5) Instead of. "Grandma meets my side and greets me with a warming welcome, a filial embrace acknowledging the three hundred and eighty-nine days devoid of our time together." Try. "Grandma is at my side. She greets and hugs me, a warm welcome that erases the three hundred and eighty-nine days we were apart." 7) Why is Grandma ".half excited and half angry." ? It s best to decide which way she feels and use only one. 8) Don t use unneeded phrases. "Show, don t tell." 9) Example: This sentence makes little sense. "Caught up in a whirlwind of work, family, money and obligations, I find myself alienated the joy, optimism and and unknowing insight exuberated by me as a little darling." (For one thing, "exuberated" is not a word.) Try. "I get caught in work, family, money and obligations. Then I know I push away the joy, optimism and insight I had as a child." 10) Back to the first paragraph. 11) Suggest you describe the Grandma without a history of ".smiling, laughing..crying." Try. "Her smile deepens. Wrinkles and gray hair show her sixty-six years." 12) "Now, tainted with the arrogance of middle age." (This is a fragment.) 13) Eliminate many unneeded prepositional phrases. -Some prepositions are ".in, by, of, to, with, as, within, at, on, up, if." and more. Call a research librarian or teacher and ask for a list. End Edit.

The most important and underrated factor in a writer’s success is discipline. Talent and luck always help, but having a consistent writing practice is often the difference between aspiring writers and published writers.

The winter holiday office party is a tradition celebrated in workplaces of all kinds, and even chronicled in films. Write a personal essay about any sort of festive activity or event that you have attended with your coworkers. Do you consider your coworkers akin to close friends or family, or is your relationship more of a casual acquaintanceship? Has this changed over the years due to an experience or circumstance? Does a holiday office party serve as a setting in which you and your colleagues became closer or distanced?

A Special Section of the Sept/Oct 2010 edition of Poets & Writers Magazine has a chart ranking U.S. colleges/universities offering MFAs (Masters of Fine Arts) degrees in all aspects of creative writing. If the MFA program is good, no doubt the undergraduate curriculum will be too. Here s the link: http://www.pw.org/content/2011_mfa_rankings_the_top_fifty_0 Click on the chart image and enlarge the print to read it best. The well-respected magazine US News and World Report also publishes an annual ranking of best colleges/universities in the US. Some of the info is available online on their web pages: http://www.usnews.com/sections/education However, I don t find the list for schools with creative writing programs. Most likely, that list is in the full Best Colleges report. One must either pay for the full report to access it online. Or, most likely your local public library (or even your high school library) will hold the print edition. Just go to the library and talk with a reference librarian who can help you find it to look through. Since many of the schools listed are state universities you will also want to investigate the tuition for those living in-state (if you live in one of the particular states) and those who are out-of-state. The private colleges/universities (like Brown Univ. & NYU) do not have differing tuitions for in-state and out-of-state students. Also, from my own personal experience, often the private colleges/universities have a bigger "pot of money" available to grant as scholarship funds to students than do the state funded schools. Best wishes
