There are numerous approaches to solving math problems. 'Model Drawing' is the first one that we have introduced because we feel that it has the greatest impact in.

When you are problem solving you are doing one of two things. Either you are fixing something that is broken, or you are building something. If you are building something, it could be a completely new something, or it could be an improved something. Read on to discover how to do these effectively.

Decision-making maxims will help to reinforce the above decision-making process whether related to problem-solving or not, for example:

"We know what happens to people who stay in the middle of the road. They get run down." (Aneurin Bevan)

That''''s why, when faced with problems, most of us try to eliminate them as quickly as possible. But have you ever chosen the easiest or most obvious solution – and then realized that you have entirely missed a much better solution? Or have you found yourself fixing just the symptoms of a problem, only for the situation to get much worse?

To be an effective problem-solver, you need to be systematic and logical in your approach. This quiz helps you assess your current approach to problem solving. By improving this, you''''ll make better overall decisions. And as you increase your confidence with solving problems, you''''ll be less likely to rush to the first solution – which may not necessarily be the best one.

Practice your math problem solving skills with our tests. Use a calculator only where necessary. You shouldn''t need more than three lines of working for any problem. Redraw geometry figures to include the information in the question.

Initially don''t worry too much about the time until you have a feel for the type of questions. But, by the time you have done two or three tests you should start getting tough about the time you take.

Good luck!

Do you have a textbook? If so, take examples from there (And most textbooks have the answers at the back - for test review sections at least) How about using the equation HCl + NaOH -> NaCl + H2O It s a very typical neutralization equation, and calculating molar mass and finding the mass of substances should be good practice. Try some of these using information from the above equation (I live in Canada - we use grams, not sure about where you re from - so if you use other units, just make grams whatever): If you have 5.0 grams of HCl, how many grams of NaCl are produced? If you have 7 grams of H2O, how many grams of NaOH were used to produce it? And so on with other conversions - good luck on the test!

Problems are at the center of what many people do at work every day. Whether you''''''''re solving a problem for a client (internal or external), supporting those who are solving problems, or discovering new problems to solve, the problems you face can be large or small, simple or complex, and easy or difficult.

A fundamental part of every manager''''''''s role is finding ways to solve them. So, being a confident problem solver is really important to your success. Much of that confidence comes from having a good process to use when approaching a problem. With one, you can solve problems quickly and effectively. Without one, your solutions may be ineffective, or you''''''''ll get stuck and do nothing, with sometimes painful consequences.

Analytical and problem solving skills are important to most every company and so it’s no surprise that job interviewers are beginning to ask about analytical and problem solving skill during the interview process.

Interview Question:  Give me details of a time when you were unable to complete a task because you didn’t have adequate information to reach a good decision.
Answer Guide : Answer should show that you will guess or settle for a solution that isn’t optimum.

An important goal of education is helping students learn how to think more productively while solving problems, by combining creative thinking (to generate ideas) and critical thinking (to evaluate ideas). Both modes of thinking are essential for a well-rounded productive thinker, according to scholars in both fields:

Richard Paul (a prominent advocate of CRITICAL THINKING ) says, Alternative solutions are often not given, they must be generated or thought-up. Critical thinkers must be creative thinkers as well, generating possible solutions in order to find the best one. Very often a problem persists, not because we can''t tell which available solution is best, but because the best solution has not yet been made available no one has thought of it yet. { source }

The Art of Problem Solving texts have been used by tens of thousands of outstanding students, including many winners of major national contests such as MATHCOUNTS and the American Mathematics Competitions.
