Ellen Lupton and J. Abbott Miller. Published in special issue of Visible Language on graphic design history, edited by Andrew Blauvelt (1994). This is an earlier version of the essay “Deconstruction and Graphic Design,” published in our book Design Writing Research.

In both its lengthy history and in the relatively recent explosion of visual communication in the 20th and 21st centuries, the distinction between advertising , art, graphic design and fine art has disappeared. They share many elements, theories, principles, practices, languages and sometimes the same benefactor or client. In advertising, the ultimate objective is the sale of goods and services. In graphic design, "the essence is to give order to information, form to ideas, expression, and feeling to artifacts that document human experience." [4]

During the Tang Dynasty (618–907) wood blocks were cut to print on textiles and later to reproduce Buddhist texts. A Buddhist scripture printed in 868 is the earliest known printed book. Beginning in the 11th century, longer scrolls and books were produced using movable type printing, making books widely available during the Song dynasty (960–1279). [6]

Throughout history graphic designers have written design manifestos and taken action to focus their energy on designing for good.

In Steven Heller’s recent essay featured on  Design Observer, “America’s Big Design Problem,” he discusses how now, more than ever, designers must be progressive thinkers and makers. While some feel design should not politicize, many feel that taking a stand for one’s point of view is exactly what design is meant to do.

The Lantingji Xu , Preface to the Poems Composed at the Orchid Pavilion is the most famous work of Chinese calligrapher Wang Xizhi, created in year 353. [6]

Text is an excerpt from The Instructions of Amenemhat II (Dynasty XII), and reads: "Be on your guard against all who are subordinate to you. Trust no brother, know no friend, make no intimates."

"Graphic design is the distillation of complex ideas into a visually simple format." If you want a topic start with the most common piece of graphic design, signage. Think about how signage moves you around a shopping center or mall or helps you find points of interest in your town s tourist areas. You may use my quote, but the rest of the essay is yours to write.

Graphic design is everywhere. It lurks in book covers, magazines, billboards, product packaging, commercials, and websites. It can pass unnoticed by many who see a pretty image and a catchy slogan without realizing the time, effort, and skill needed to create it.

It's a means to visually communicate a message to a given audience, whether to sell a product, promote an image, or inform the public. Graphic design is a perfect mix of creativity and business.

A history of typefaces and how they have evolved through centuries based on technology and/or the setting of the era would be relatively easy to research and interesting.

Brody has consistently pushed the boundaries of visual communication in all media through his experimental and challenging work, and continues to extend the visual languages we use through his exploratory creative expression. Initially, he worked on Album covers, which typically are bold, effective and need to have a statement. You should also consider his climactic time. What kind of work was he producing at his peak? Or hasn t he reached it yet..?
