This is a survey of the main trends in twentieth-century literary theory. Lectures will provide background for the readings and explicate them where appropriate, while attempting to develop a coherent overall context that incorporates philosophical and social perspectives on the recurrent questions: what is literature, how is it produced, how can it be understood, and what is its purpose?

The Iceberg Theory (sometimes known as the "theory of omission") is a style of writing (turned colloquialism) coined by American writer Ernest Hemingway.

Engineering relates because an engineer would look at something such as a bridge or a building and examine the nature of the object in question, asking himself/herself "What is a building and how can I make it better?" Literary theory is more to do with how people have analyzed texts in the past, so you would look at socialism, structuralism, feminisn.. all the big literary theories. Critical theory isn t massively different in tersm of academic literature, but it is more likely to include your own personal anaylsis of a text.
