True grants can be very difficult to find and harder still to get. It may not be easy to find the right grant, but when you do, properly completing the grant application will be your biggest challenge. Most grant applications ask for similar information, but they often have different formats. Some will have a list of questions. Others will ask for a “narrative”—the story of your project. Whether it''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''s for a business or organization, writing a grant proposal is a skill that you can learn.

Based on the above analysis,
a carefully designed, well reasoned proposal will overcome these common pitfalls. It also represents and important credibility statement about the investigator.

The exact format and requirements for a research proposal can vary slightly depending on the type of research being proposed and the specific demands of the institution you plan to submit your proposal to, but there are a few basics that are almost always needed. Overall, a good research proposal takes time to write and must identify what the proposed research will address and why the proposed research is so important. Here is a brief explanation of the sections needed to complete a standard research proposal as well as the writing timeline you should strive to follow.

My project explores how Americans reimagined the social contract, or how individuals relate to their society, following the ratification of the Constitution in 1788. Historians and legal theorists often interpret ratification as the culmination of a national debate that set the new political order in place. But in the first decades after ratification, Americans—as they still do today—continued to discuss and redefine what individual rights, representation, citizenship, and other concepts should mean.

Half of the world lives in cities today. A critical question for scholars and political planners alike, is how can a city maintain itself for a long period of time? Archaeology is the one discipline that can study the often millennia long history of a city. My research site is the ancient Maya city of Aventura, which has a long 2,500 year history. Founded around 1000 BC and occupied at least until AD 1500 (Spanish Conquest) this Pre-Columbian city offers a unique opportunity to study how a city changes through time.

Few proposal writing resources are geared specifically to individual grantseekers. Foundations that give to individuals have highly specific criteria, and this makes it hard to create a comprehensive how-to guide.

In general, proposals from individuals do not exceed five single-spaced pages, in addition to the cover letter and the budget. Below is a typical breakdown:

In business, writing a proposal is often required to offer solutions to real problems. In her book "Business Communication: Process and Product," Mary Guffey states, "Proposals are persuasive offers to solve problems, provide services, or sell equipment." While proposal writing often require extensive research and must be done under tight deadlines, breaking the document down to its basic parts can greatly simplify the process and increase the chances of the proposal being met with a favorable response.

Know your audience. Conduct research to determine the individuals who make up the chain of command reading the proposal. This will determine how technical the language should be, whether or not a glossary will be needed to define terms, the tone and how much background information about the problem needs to be included.

Although the guts of your grant proposal will take up most of your time and energy, don t short change your cover letter. Attention to the finer points of putting the proposal package together can make or break a funding request. Don t turn off your funder with a sloppy cover letter.

Mim Carlson and Tori O Neal-McElrath, authors of Winning Grants, Step by Step , point out that the cover letter should:

Before you think of how to write this grant proposal, find first a foundation who might be able to help you. It will not be easy and you will have to JUSTIFY why they need to support a redecorating project. Are there studies that show that cancer patients react better to a light blue room? Is there any impact at all in their recovery if you change the room? The key to remember when writing a grant proposal is you have to CLEARLY demonstrate the need for the money. Think about this first, and then find possible funding sources. If you are operating a non-profit organization, Your best bet is to seek for private grants or grants from private foundations. The best resource for this is Foundation Center http://www.fdncenter.org. They have a very good database covering all organizations giving grants and you can find foundations that are interested in supporting your type of cause. However, it s a subscription based website ($19.95 per month I think is the cheapest subscription price). But it certainly is worth the fee. You can subscribe one month, and make sure you get all the info you need and then stop the subscription. If you want to try federal sources, you can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) http://www.cfda.gov and Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov - these are two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. CFDA has several ways to search for grants. I suggest you search by beneficiary and select Private Non Profit Organization and you can find listings of grants available http://12.46.245.173/pls/portal30/CATALOG.BROWSE_BENEF_RPT.show The government is NOT in the business of giving away free money for the sake of giving away money. Grants are free, but it means OBLIGATION. You will be obligated to do as the grant sets out to do. Grants have objectives, and your purpose must fit the objective of the grant.

You can check with other gated communities near you and see how they took care of it. But, considering you re in the market for security services anyway, why don t you let the the security pros write a proposal to you. Invite a representative to come out to the property and give you a proposal. While they are there, they can assess your security issues visually and make on the spot recommendations. Have several security firms submit proposals. Then you will have a presentation all ready for your next community meeting. I found a short list of companies that stated they did business nationally (below). Your local phone book will be a good start.
