Since no one is willing to commiserate with you, I will. I am in the same position you were only I am now 25. I was a weeboo too. But the thing you have to understand is that the definition of weeboo is someone obsessed with Japan who doesn t know anything about it. Businessmen or teachers who work in Japan are not considered this. Japan is just where they work and live. My advice to you is twofold. 1) Stay true to yourself. I know that sounds corny, but you are an American. Don t try to be Japanese. Don t try to say that everything in Japan is better. It isn t. Remember what you like about the U.S. and keep yourself balanced. 2) Learn everything you can while you are there. I am assuming you are maybe going to Temple? If that s the case you will have lots of opportunities to improve you Japanese and learn more about the culture. Take this time to really get to know the language and the people you meet and form your own opinions. Once you get into the professional world weeboo is a pretty irrelevant idea. I work as a Japanese translator and the fact that I am adapted to Japanese business customs doesn t make me a fan girl, it makes my salary higher. So don t worry. It is a stereotype that you will grow out of. In my opinion you should definitely go. Because of my Japanese skill I was able to get jobs very easily through my whole life. Its such a valuable skill. Don t worry about what people think. Just do what is best for you and will make you happy. Lastly, most Japanese people are very open to foreigners as visitors. When you actually buy the house next door to them, things may change. But for now you will be able to make lots of friends. Everyone is studying English and watching American movies so they will have a lot to talk about with you. Take the opportunity.
