I think this was part of a political strategy. Beck is going to distance himself from the Libertarian message, because the Libertarian message is a very secular one. Libertarians believe very strongly in liberty in general, but we especially believe in the first amendment, which is very clear in its demand to separate church and state. Not only that, but the most prominent Libertarians are all atheists, such as Ayn Rand and Milton Friedman. The Cato Institute is even distancing itself from the Tea Party people because they are getting frighteningly theocratic. But because the Republicans have alienated Hispanics, blacks, gays, women, Muslims and young people, they have to target some other demographic besides old straight white Christian men if they want to get any votes this election season. So they are going back to the tried and true Evangelical vote and trying to get churches solidly behind them. To say that the rally was not political is laughable because it was all about politics. They talked about American policy and where the future of the country aught to be-how are those not political topics? This is just more pandering, the Republicans are very desperate, the Tea Party message has not resonated as much as they thought and they need to attract customers.
