You may in fact be a very talented young music artist, but you sureley might be missing the right knowlege, skills, and know-how's of the music industy. This is something that does NOT come with talent. This is something that is acquired by learning.

You already know how hard it is to get in the music industry. If you've heard it once you've heard it a thousand times…

Your friends and family don't have a clue how serious you are. They don't have a clue how hard you've worked or even how hard you're willing to work to get in the music business. And that's the sad part.

Do you ever catch yourself bemoaning the state of the modern music industry? “How come he’s got a record deal?” you whine to anyone who’ll listen. “And she looks like Beyonce, but sounds like a foghorn!” Yet still the major record companies continue to prepare our McMusic tepid, homogeneous, and driven home by a marketing budget big enough to cure global poverty. In a pique of indignation and arrogance, you resolve to give those nasty majors a run for their money. You’re going to set up your very own independent record label, and sell your music to a grateful public.

There’s no shortage of indie success stories at present. Arctic Monkeys (Domino) are riding high with their Billboard -conquering second album, Favourite Worst Nightmare. Then there’s the likes of Bloc Party (Wichita), Kaiser Chiefs (B Unique), Maximo Park (Warp), Gossip (Back Yard) and Enter Shikari (Ambush Reality), to name but a few. In terms of discovering good music, and the long-term nurturing of talent, the indie labels are punching well above their weight.

I just got home from a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner with my mother, sister, brother, niece and nephew in Franklin Park, New Jersey. The roads were slick from an early snow shower that turned to freezing rain. As I was driving home it dawned on me that I haven’t written a blog post (on any topic) in over a month. But tonight I suddenly found the inspiration to present…

For those of you who haven’t read my previous posts on this topic, I’ll briefly bring you up to speed. I wrote a post on Music Think Tank Open that was transferred to the main page (an honor in my book) called How to Write a Music Business Plan. It was a bit fluffy like this one might end up and one of the MTT readers called me on it. The first comment was, “Would have been stronger with a template or sample.” I got pissed off and created a template. Thanks again Justin.

You have completed part one to fulfilling your dream, your passion of starting your record label. Now it is time to make sure your record label is a success. Note ‘success’ is the key here. Many start-ups occur but just as many start-ups there are closures. Closures occur because certain factors are ignored, factors that build the framework of a successful record label business.

The First Step

The number one thing an independent record label should do is retain an entertainment lawyer. Any contract between you and anyone in the music business should be looked over by a lawyer. It is not wise to create your own contracts. If something was to go wrong or a misunderstanding occurred you may not have the necessary securities listed in your contract to protect you and your business in a court of law.

Starting a record label requires no education. Illiterate rappers start them all the time. Starting your own business requires a certain drive. A fire in the belly so to speak. But it is also the one way to make a good living without college. Just understand that 80% of all new businesses fail within 5 years. You still need some college as a backup in case yours is one of the failures.

Business Plan. As you start your record label, you are going to need to determine what genres of music you want to deal in, how much startup money you will.
