Raising broiler chickens is becoming more popular in Zimbabwe, as people try to find extra income amid the growing economic challenges and high unemployment levels in the country. Many have lost hopes of ever getting jobs in the formal sector, and have started different types of income generating projects.

Before you start a broiler production business, you have to decide how many chickens you want to keep, where you are going keep them, and your target market. The number of birds you keep will depend on the amount of land and capital you have, and also the size of your target market. You should always carry out a feasibility study, market research and write a business plan before you venture into any business. Do not make the mistake of starting a broiler business or any other business just because someone is doing it and he/she says it’s profitable.

Ducks and chickens get on absolutely fine together. They just do their own thing. One of the best breeds for egg laying ducks are Khaki Campells or Indian Runner Ducks I personally recommend the Khaki Campbells If getting chicks rear them inside in a warm sheltered environment until they can look after themselves. Unless your planning to breed the ducks its best not to get a male as they tend to bother the lady ducks all the time and egg production will drop! Have fun with the fowl

I m not sure what eggs sell for where you live, but in the grocery store here, they re about $2.69 per dozen. We keep a mixed flock of free range birds (ducks, laying hens and bantams) that numbers about 50. I estimate that I spend about $12 a week on feed (we mix layer crumbles with cracked corn and fancy scratch). 50 birds go through about a bag of feed per week. For items such as grit or dewormer, these are sold in larger quantities (grit is also a 50-lb. bag), so a bag that size will last forever with a hobby flock (ours last about a year at a time!) If you are starting your flock from chicks, your startup expenses will be higher, without any return (eggs) for about 6-8 months. Your birds may also stop production in the winter, meaning you will need to house and feed chicks for nearly a year before you see a single egg. I would advise looking for older pullets or adult layers - the cost is higher than buying chicks, but overall they are less work and less money. I ve been selling our eggs for a couple of years now - and get about $3.00 for fresh, free range and natural eggs. I know other breeders who feed organic feed and add flax seed and get around $5.00 for organic, omega-3 eggs. If you ve never had a fresh egg before, $3.00 is well worth it. They are so much better than store eggs! So reasonably, if you have 3 families that you plan on raising eggs for, you would probably be using a dozen or so per week per family, meaning you collectively spend a little less than $9.00 a week on store bought eggs. As long as your feed bill is $9.00 per week or less (meaning don t keep as many birds as someone like me!) you can very easily break even. You should also ask your sons families to "donate to the cause" - meaning you ll collect the eggs and feed your chickens, but they can chip in on the feed bill as well. Out of all of our livestock, chickens are by and far the easiest to care for and the least time-consuming. Feeding, watering and cleaning takes less than 30 minutes each day. I m a firm believer that anyone who can own chickens, should. You can guarantee the freshness and safety of the eggs you are feeding to your family, and these will be far superior than what you can find in the store. And chickens can be very useful around your property as well (we use ours for natural insect control and free fertilizer as well). I d say get set up and get started - we started with 6 in a hobby flock years ago. I haven t bought an egg in years!

Eggs are collected as soon as possible after being laid and are held in cool storage to protect internal quality. Farmers check eggs for quality using a special lighting (candling) system. There was once a time when every farm and many suburban households had a few chooks scavenging in the yard, getting some household scraps, and sometimes getting a handful of wheat each day. This method of farming is called extensive. The number of these farms decreased as intensive farming methods developed, allowing one person to care for large numbers of birds.

MILTON, Mass. -- Sweaters for chickens? It sounds like a joke, but a plucky group of retirees in suburban Boston has hatched a plan to keep poultry warm during the New England winter.

The unusual project began after members of a knitting club at Fuller Village, a retirement home in Milton, Massachusetts, heard about the hardships that some chickens suffer this time of year.

In the United States, egg production followed these principles until early in the twentieth century. Then new systems emerged for producing eggs in more specialized facilities, making the operation more efficient. In addition, population shifts from farms to towns and cities increased the demand for fresh products. These changes encouraged many dairy farmers to include egg production as an additional enterprise.

The late 1950s and 1960s saw drastic changes in the industry. Co-ops, feed companies, and other private firms organized egg production into a coordinated industry.
