Although much headway has been made in this area in the past twenty or so years, I feel there is a still a tendency in medicine to treat diseases the same way no matter who the patient is. We are slowly learning that procedures and drugs are not always universally effective. Not only must we alter our care of patients depending upon these cultural and social factors, we may also need to alter our entire emotional and psychological approach to them as well.

If you had told me ten years ago that I would be writing this essay and planning for yet another ten years into the future, part of me would have been surprised. I am a planner and a maker of to-do lists, and it has always been my plan to follow in the steps of my father and become a physician. This plan was derailed when I was called to active duty to serve in Iraq as part of the War on Terror.

Many applications now have a question, sometimes optional , geared to encouraging people with minority backgrounds or unusual educational or family histories to write about their background.

Well, nobody can say for certain what the vagaries of that particular admissions officer will be, but those two topics seem very related, in my opinion. You ve shown in both that you have a commitment to social justice, and in one case, you have a personal connection to it. Lawyers often work in more than one area of law. Don t worry about it. Just make sure it s structured logically and that it s written concisely. They re looking for persuasive, sharp, clean writing as much as they are looking for the content.

Over the past decade as a medical admissions advisor and consultant, I have witnessed how being the parent of an applicant can be just as stressful as being the actual applicant.

Students can apply for free by writing directly to the Ministry of Education. Please make sure that documents are all complete and that you apply 6-8 months before the academic year begins in October.

Note that applicants who apply directly should apply very early and be prepared to resubmit their file if any errors are found. Applicants who apply to Romanian universities on their own are fully responsible for correctly completing their application file and providing all the documentation.

You want to get into the best school, but you need to stand out from other applicants. US News reports the average medical school acceptance rate is 6.9% or lower, but our med school clients enjoy an 80% acceptance rate. How can you separate yourself from the competition successfully? By creating a great personal statement.

Over at Inside PA Training Paul wrote a wonderful blog post about the common pitfalls that many PA school applicants fall victim to while composing their PA school essay.

This is an excellent list because eight years ago while I was applying to PA school I  proved how adhering to each one of these elements was a guaranteed formula for failure.

If it were me, I would write about my international work experience. I m also white and middle-class, but I ve worked in Spain and Italy. I m unique in that I bring solid experience working successsfully with different cultures. If I were you, I would probably write about my farm experiences. I would examine three or four "stereotypical" characteristics of farmers and show how I actually embodied those characteristics, and why they would work in med school. For example, people think farmers are "simple". You could elaborate on that and talk about a time you found a simple solution to a complex problem. You saved time and money. Some people think farmers are "traditional". Same thing- talk about how your traditional values like persistance and honesty would make you a good doctor. Having a unified theme- in this case stereotypes- will really pull your paper together.
