Тема: Great Gatsby Analysis Essay!?

In one sense, the title of the novel is ironic; the title character is neither “great” nor named Gatsby. He is a criminal whose real name is James Gatz, and the life he has created for himself is an illusion. By the same token, the title of the novel refers to the theatrical skill with which Gatsby makes this illusion seem real: the moniker “ the Great Gatsby ” suggests the sort of vaudeville billing that would have been given to an acrobat, an escape artist, or a magician.

In general, symbols in the novel are intimately connected to dreams: Gatsby’s dream of Daisy causes him to associate her image with everything he values, just as he associates the green light with his dream for the future. In reading and interpreting The Great Gatsby, it is at least as important to consider how characters think about symbols as it is to consider the qualities of the symbols themselves.

I haven t studied this that long, all i can suggest is that he continues to pursue the past and daisy, and is unsatisfied with the present because he loves her, he s obsessed with her - the only reason he built himself up and became rich was to become the perfect man that he thought she would want. He orientated his whole new life around her, he bought a house opposite hers so he could see her, and he waits for the green light just to know she s over there. He still can t get her because he s new money , and daisy would never go for that because she s far too stuck up and worried about appearances - tom is old money. i guess fitzgerald is suggesting by gatsbys failure that money and riches and the glitter and gold of that life means nothing, without love and true friends - material success does not equate to actual success.

Dude, I was gonna help you cuz I liked the book, but the question is way too long.

I wouldn t use this as your attention getter, it is more of a thesis/overview of what your essay will contain. It s a very solid structure for that, but the attention getter should be something lighter, directly aimed at getting more attention. Also, this may be a hard thesis to fully prove because the book directly likes to look at the destruction of these ideals, the destruction of his dreams, and a lot of the quotes you can find are more arguably towards is innocents/ignorance. Though some you can use.,, hmm. page numbers may be a bit off depending on what book you use. "Jimmy was bound to get ahead. He always had some resolves like this or something. Do you notice what he s got about improving his mind? He was always great for that." (Pg. 175) "Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgiastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that s no matter-tomorrow we will run faster, stretch our arms farther…. And one fine morning-" (Pg. 182) Take a look at this site - http://classiclit.about.com/od/greatgatsbythe/a/aa_greatgatsbyq.htm or.. http://www.shmoop.com/great-gatsby/quotes.html
