I've decided to use a fictional company called Terra Engineering for my business planning examples. The following two examples will show you how to structure a successful and unsuccessful summary. Pay close attention to how the successful summary is outlined:

Don t "say what happened, and then why that was an odyssey" Its difficult to stay away from summarizing. A paper should be written so that someone who has read the story can read it without feeling like they re reading a summary AND so that someone who hasn t read the story can understand the point you re trying to make and how your examples tie into it. (I know this example isn t true, and they made it safely past the Sirens, but I haven t read the Odyssey in a long time and needed something to write about) Example: Do not say: When the Sirens sang their sweet song and the men saw their beautiful faces the men were distracted. The Sirens then attacked their ship and sank it, the entire crew, except for Odysseus, drowned. That lengthened Odysseus journey. making it an Odyssey. Say something more like: When Odysseus s crew was distracted by the Sirens sweet song the ship hit rocks and sank, lengthening and complicating Odysseus s journey, making it an Odyssey. Or like: Odysseus journey was made longer and more trying when Odysseus s crew was distracted by the Sirens sweet song the ship hit rocks and sank. Difficult and deathly setbacks such as this turned Odysseus journey into an Odyssey. I pretty much gave the same information in all three. But the techniques used to do it were different. In the first a summarized then explained. In the second two I intertwined the explanation with the example from the Odyssey. You can go to my profile page and e-mail me your essay if you want.
