A topic sentence is a sentence , sometimes at the beginning of a paragraph , that states or suggests the main idea (or topic ) of a paragraph.
Not all paragraphs begin with topic sentences. In some, the topic sentence appears in the middle or at the end. In others, the topic sentence is implied or absent altogether.

Perfecting the skill of writing topic sentences is essential to successful essay writing. A topic sentence usually comes at the beginning of a paragraph, and lets your reader know what to expect from each paragraph. Think of it as the preview for a movie or a headline in a newspaper, highlighting the “main point” that’s to come in that paragraph.  Make sure your topic sentences are up to par, and the rest of your writing will feel like a breeze.
The term essay hooks is the introductory part of the essay that grabs the reader’s attention. It gives him a chance to decide and make up his mind whether to continue reading your work or not. The hooks for essays are actually the baits for readers. While writing any essay, one has to make sure that the topic you choose and the overall article must be appealing to the audience. This way one will be able to grab the attention of readers. It is an interesting sentence or phrase that captures the attention and glues the reader to your piece of writing.
The hooks for any essay usually appear in the first sentence of the article. It could be some interesting quote, a well-known fact, a statistic or some famous last words. There are numerous types of hooks for essays that the writer can utilize. This does not mean that you can use only a single type, you can use as many hooks as you want, the main aim is to make your work creative and attractive so that the reader is compelled to read.

Back in the late 90s, in the process of reading for my MA dissertation, I put together a collection of hundreds of sentence frames that I felt could help me with my academic writing later on. And they did. Immensely. After the course was over, I stacked my sentences away, but kept wondering if I could ever put them to good use and perhaps help other MA / PhD students.
