Measurement matters. At some point in the dissertation development process, everyone needs to confront the issue of measurement.  We’ve found that many if not most students have a fuzzy sense at best of how to define and measure important characteristics of the concepts or phenomena they propose to study.  While measurement may be less of an issue in qualitative studies, careful definition and operational measurement of variables and indicators is essential in all quantitative work.

Likert-type scales  are commonly used in surveys and other quantitative work, but it is essential to understand how the underlying constructs are measured with Likert scales, and the assumptions and limitations that accompany use of such a measure.

Now, dissertations and theses are more discoverable than ever. Authors can now choose to make their scholarly work more widely available through the power of the internet. With effective search strategies many graduate works can be found on-line. Search engines (e.g., Bing, Yahoo, Google and Google Scholar) crawling the internet can deliver relevant search results, including dissertations and theses. ProQuest has an explicit arrangement with Google Books, allows indexing and searching across bibliographic data for graduate works published in 2007 and forward.

Excluded Works: Canadian graduate works published prior to 2011 are not included. Also excluded are works that are temporarily embargoed or restricted at an author''s request.

One thing that causes unnecessary stress for many doctoral candidates is writing their dissertation acknowledgements (The other stress is finding out how much a doctoral robe costs for graduation.)

The challenge is creating a balance between thanking everyone who made a meaningful contribution to your dissertation and the political aspects of who should be included.
