  • May is in the spring.

  • Three years after the Civil War ended, on May 5, 1868, the head of an organization of Union veterans the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) established Decoration Day as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. Maj. Gen. John A. Logan declared that Decoration Day should be observed on May 30. It is believed that date was chosen because flowers would be in bloom all over the country.

The first large observance was held that year at Arlington National Cemetery, across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C.

Originally called Decoration Day, from the early tradition of decorating graves with flowers, wreaths and flags, Memorial Day is a day for remembrance of those who have died in service to our country. It was first widely observed on May 30, 1868 to commemorate the sacrifices of Civil War soldiers, by proclamation of Gen. John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of former Union sailors and soldiers.

During that first national celebration, former Union Gen. and sitting Ohio Congressman James Garfield made a speech at Arlington National Cemetery, after which 5,000 participants helped to decorate the graves of the more than 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers who were buried there.

First of all I totally agree with you and think that the soldiers do not get enough gratitude! I think your essay sounds great already, but I have a few pointers: I think your opening paragraph should be a preview of things to come in the main body so I think that since your second paragraph talks about soldiers leaving their families you should mention that in the opening. Maybe something added to your other sentence like, "They forget about their own needs, leave their families behind and focus on the citizens.." Also, I think the sentence in your middle paragraph that starts with, "Someone once said Bravery.." I think that sentence should start a new paragraph since it is a new thought about the bravery of the soldiers. On the last sentence of the second paragraph it ends with looked upon by others, but it doesn t say looked upon by others as what. It is sorta left open. I think maybe something like,"The sacrifices are many that the brave men and women make for our country, and should looked upon by others as amazing." Then at the very end when you are talking about the soldiers it switches from you talking about them, to sounding like you are talking directly to them. I would maybe change it to, " Those people. Those soldiers. In my mind, they are the most important part of our country. They are the ones keeping us free and keeping us safe." I am not an English teacher so I don t have all the answers, but hopefully I could help a little! :) Good luck!

On a spring day in 1865, Waterloo, NY druggist Henry C. Welles watched as a lone widow walked to the cemetery to place flowers on the grave of her deceased Civil War soldier husband.  How soon they forget, Welles thought, resolving to do something to make sure that those who gave their lives in defense of their country would not be forgotten. Working with Gen. John B. Murray, Welles planned the first Memorial Day in Waterloo in 1866, and for 150 consecutive years, Waterloo’s citizens have remembered. With parades, prayers and ceremonies.

On May 26, 1966, that consistency inspired President Lyndon Johnson to sign a Presidential Proclamation recognizing Waterloo as the official Birthplace of Memorial Day.
