The best way to achieve what you want is to use a table. Insert a one row two column table and enter your text. When you come to the end of the text in the right hand column, hit the tab key to start a new table row if you have more text to enter. Using a table, you don t have to mess around with paragraph spacing and the like. The rows of the table will automatically align the text properly. If you don t need borders and shading, turn them off in Table Properties. I had to do this with hundreds of documents that required side by side paragraphs for documents that had translations paragraph by paragraph. Both had to be perfectly aligned.

I am assuming that you are using Win 7. Open both the old and the new doc in Word. Click in one doc and press Win key-Left arrow. Click in the other key and press Win key-Right arrow. You should now have both docs displayed on the screen. Make sure that you are able to see non -printing characters such as the spaces between words. If you are not viewing them press Ctrl-Shift-* in each doc. The return or paragraph symbol contains the paragraph formatting (such as indents, justification, etc) for that paragraph. You can highlight the paragraph, including the return, click on the Paintbrush and then highlight the area that you want to copy the formatting to. The formatting will be copied. You can copy formatting from one doc to another. If you want to copy character formatting, highlight the area that contains the font you want to copy You can also click in a doc and press Shift-F1. This will bring up the Formatting task pane and will show you all the formatting that is applied in that area. Click in another area to see what formatting is applied there.
