Not so long ago, nurses were task-workers who simply carried out doctors’ orders and followed a fixed set of rules. Today, they are skilled and capable professionals whose expertise is essential to patient care and public health initiatives. It’s been a long road. And it’s clear that developing our critical thinking skills has helped to bring about this transformation within our industry during the last half century.

So what exactly is critical thinking? There are a multitude of definitions – some of them head-scratching-ly complex – so the Foundation for Critical Thinking has assembled some of them on its website. This one is our favorite:

A Labor and Delivery Nurse is considered to an advanced practice nurse, requiring a registered nursing (RN) license with a Bachelor s of Science Degree in Nursing (BSN) at a minimum and also additional education and training in Inpatient Obstetric Nursing (RNC-OB). A specialty certification as a Labor and Delivery Nurse is also required. Registered nurses (RN) usually take one of three education paths: a bachelor s of science degree in nursing (BSN), an associate’s degree in nursing (ADN), or a diploma from an approved nursing program. Registered nurses must also be licensed. Education In all nursing education programs, students take courses in nursing, anatomy, physiology, microbiology, chemistry, nutrition, psychology and other social and behavioral sciences, as well as in liberal arts. BSN programs typically take four years to complete; ADN and diploma programs usually take two to three years to complete. All programs also include supervised clinical experience in hospital departments such as pediatrics, psychiatry, maternity, and surgery. A number of programs include clinical experience in extended and long-term care facilities, public health departments, home health agencies, or ambulatory (walk-in) clinics. Bachelor s degree programs usually include more training in the physical and social sciences, communication, leadership, and critical thinking, which is becoming more important as nursing practice becomes more complex. They also offer more clinical experience in non-hospital settings. A bachelor s degree or higher is often necessary for administrative positions, research, consulting, and teaching. Generally, licensed graduates of any of the three types of education programs (bachelor s, associate’s, or diploma) qualify for entry-level positions as a staff nurse. Many registered nurses with an ADN or diploma find an entry-level position and then take advantage of tuition reimbursement benefits to work toward a BSN by completing an RN-to-BSN program. There are also master’s degree programs in nursing, combined bachelor’s and master’s programs, and programs for those who wish to enter the nursing profession but hold a bachelor’s degree in another field. I recommend visiting the LPN to RN Degree Online web site which provides nursing career information, insightful nursing articles, detailed nursing school profiles, and links to campus based nursing schools and accredited online nursing degree programs. http://lpntorndegreeonline.com Another resource you may find helpful is: Association of Women s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses(AWHONN): http://www.awhonn.org/awhonn/ For information about nurses salaries, check out the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics web pages on Registered Nurses: http://www.bls.gov/ooh/Healthcare/Registered-nurses.htm Hope this helps. Its such a wonderful career to get into. But I have to warn you, if you plan on working in a hospital its gonna be hard, ecspecially if your in peds. Your gonna see things that are going to be difficult to deal with. Emotionally you have to prepare yourself for some difficult situations.Im not trying to rain on your parade but you have to take the good with the bad hon. Ive cried a few times, its normal. If you want to work in peds, maybe its a good idea to start in a office , not a hospital. You wont get paid as much but its a great learning experience. Plus the hours are better ( their are very few peds offices that do overnight appts.)And remember you have a long time to pick a nursing feild, so dont stress about it now. When you do your internship at your local hospital, you will be able to try out a few different aspects of nursing. So best of luck girl, follow your dreams!
