When you are problem solving you are doing one of two things. Either you are fixing something that is broken, or you are building something. If you are building something, it could be a completely new something, or it could be an improved something. Read on to discover how to do these effectively.

Some people are naturally good at problem solving. Others are not (yet). Most are somewhere in between. A lot of people underestimate just how good they are at problem solving. Many don't realise just how much problem solving they actually do. Problems are all around us and we solve them all the time, be it something as simple as deciding whether to put that extra blanket on the bed tonight, or something a little more difficult like constructing a plane out of old junk you've found in the garage.

Problem solving consists of using generic or ad hoc methods, in an orderly manner, for finding solutions to problems. Some of the problem-solving techniques developed and used in artificial intelligence , computer science , engineering , mathematics , or medicine are related to mental problem-solving techniques studied in psychology.

Considered the most complex of all intellectual functions, problem solving has been defined as a higher-order cognitive process that requires the modulation and control of more routine or fundamental skills. [4] Problem solving has two major domains: mathematical problem solving and personal problem solving where, in the second, some difficulty or barrier is encountered. [5]

Problems are at the center of what many people do at work every day. Whether you''re solving a problem for a client (internal or external), supporting those who are solving problems, or discovering new problems to solve, the problems you face can be large or small, simple or complex, and easy or difficult.

A fundamental part of every manager''s role is finding ways to solve them. So, being a confident problem solver is really important to your success. Much of that confidence comes from having a good process to use when approaching a problem. With one, you can solve problems quickly and effectively. Without one, your solutions may be ineffective, or you''ll get stuck and do nothing, with sometimes painful consequences.

Decision-making maxims will help to reinforce the above decision-making process whether related to problem-solving or not, for example:

"We know what happens to people who stay in the middle of the road. They get run down." (Aneurin Bevan)

In nearly every sector, problem solving is one of the  key skills that employers  seek in job applicants. It is hard to find a blue collar, administrative, managerial, or professional position that doesn t require problem solving skills of some kind.

Your problem solving skills should be on display in your cover letter, resume, and application materials. Be prepared to discuss specific ways you used your problem solving skills during phone screens and interviews.

The Art of Problem Solving texts have been used by tens of thousands of outstanding students, including many winners of major national contests such as MATHCOUNTS and the American Mathematics Competitions.

Analytical problem solving skills is an important job skill.
There is no company or organization that doesn’t depend on problem solving abilities to keep their business moving forward. All of us have found ourselves at one time or another wishing we had the problem solving skills to resolve something that eludes us. Those with good problem solving skills will general move up the corporate ladder quicker than those with weak skills. Let’s look at how to improve problem solving skills.

What Can You Do?
Once you’ve identified the problem, you need to look at that problem from different angles. Try to gather facts related to the problem, and try to recall previous solutions that would apply.

Note: the user above (who subsequently deleted his answer) was talking about search heuristics, which are not what you are asking about. See this link for more on that: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heuristic_%28computer_science%29 Now, for my relevant answer: Honestly, the heuristics don t change. The ones Pólya describes do not become useless, even in research mathematics. The math gets harder, but the heuristics stay the same. I m a published mathematician, and honestly, when I (or anyone know and/or work with) run into problems, the first thing I do is draw a picture, try a concrete example, or generalize the problem. These methods are universally applicable and almost always helpful. Pólya s heuristics, for everybody s reference, are: 1) If you are having difficulty understanding a problem, try drawing a picture. 2) If you can t find a solution, try assuming that you have a solution and seeing what you can derive from that ("working backwards"). 3) If the problem is abstract, try examining a concrete example. 4) Try solving a more general problem first (the "inventor s paradox": the more ambitious plan may have more chances of success). I found a longer list at the source listed below: Trial and Error Make a Table Look for a Pattern Draw a Diagram Restate the Problem Compare and Contrast Data Account for All possibilities Simplify the Problem Break Set Write a Mathematical Sentence Make a Graph or Table Make a Model Work Backward Work Forward And I d add one of my own: See what the computer says I run alot of computer tests to verify my conjectures or try to come up with them. Patterns are much easier to identify if I can generate the first 10 or 20 terms with a few days of intense computer calculations. I d suggest you also check out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heuristics http://niquette.com/books/sophmag/heurist.htm

Explicit modeling involves well-prepared teachers employing a variety of instructional techniques to illuminate the key attributes of any given mathematics concept/skill. In a sense, you serve as a bridge of learning for your student, an accessible bridge between the student and the particular mathematics concept/skill they are learning:

The level of teacher support you provide your students depends on how much of a learning bridge they need. In particular, students with learning problems need a well-established learning bridge (teacher model). They learn most effectively when their teacher provides clear and multi-sensory models of a mathematics concept/skill during math instruction.
