Тема: How do you write a literary analysis?

Students are asked to write literary analysis essays because this type of assignment encourages you to think about how and why a poem, short story, novel, or play was written. To successfully analyze literature, you’ll need to remember that authors make specific choices for particular reasons. Your essay should point out the author’s choices and attempt to explain their significance.

Another way to look at a literary analysis is to consider a piece of literature from your own perspective. Rather than thinking about the author’s intentions, you can develop an argument based on any single term (or combination of terms) listed below. You’ll just need to use the original text to defend and explain your argument to the reader.

To write a literary analysis, you should focus on the fundamental elements of a piece of writing that make it stand out as a work of literature. Expand on and discuss certain elements in your analysis to write a clear and lucid essay.

Don''''''''t panic when your instructor tells you that you need to write an analysis! All he or she wants is for you to take something apart to see HOW it works.

Caution! Make sure that you''''''''re NOT just summarizing the original article, story, novel, poem, etc. Go beyond simply telling us WHAT you are talking about: describe HOW and WHY its elements function.

I ve never done a literary analysis, but from research, you also have to delve into a bit of history about the subject of the book. It s seems very hard from the bit of research I did on it. I mistakenly though I had to do one for entrance into a graduate school MFA in creative writing program, but lucky for me it turned out that I had to do a critical essay, which is most similar to a critical analysis. I know that doesn t help you much, lol. But, during the time I thought I needed to write a literary analysis, I posed this same question and someone gave me lots of great sites to look at. So, you might find the sites helpful, too. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Aq_IgwaqzPP.FHBWQAPTZwjty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20100120121207AAsWiPY One more thing, search for literary journals because you can see first hand how a literary analysis (or critique) is done. Check your local library or your school library or see if you can buy one somewhere. I also asked a question about literary journals, here, http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AuxjkXwATx89.TiRMo.GCMzty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20100507160449AAcUbd1.
